As more people hear that I host Voices of Hope on Blog Talk Radio they inevitably ask questions. I love it when this happens. Hands down, the question asked most often is how I choose a Blog Talk Radio guest.
On Voices of Hope, we provide information to victims of sexual or domestic violence. This doesn't mean that the show focuses on orders of protection or what to do (or not do) when it court. Both of those are extremely important and best left up to local advocates.
It's impossible for one agency to know the ins and outs for every court system across the U.S. That's why it's important for victims who are currently in crisis to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1.800.799.SAFE. The can be contacted online from a safe computer at www.ndvh.org.
How I choose a Blog Talk Radio guest depends on different factors. The time of year is always taken into consideration. For example, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month but it is also Halloween. The goal for that month is to bring in a good representation of survivors who have overcome but to also address personal safety. Kids always want candy on Halloween. Unfortunately, that's not safe for every survivor.
We also look for guests who have unique skills. When a domestic violence survivor asked how to rebuild her financial life we turned to Kalyn Risker with New Safe Start who presented with the NCDSV. She's not only a survivor in her own right but a financial expert. Who better to learn from than someone who has "been there, done that" and can pass the knowledge on to others?
Another factor in how I choose a Blog Talk Radio guest is their experience. Has this person been on a talk show before? How did this person react on a phone call or face-to-face discussion? Being on the air is intimidating. No one wants to be on live internet airways and panic or shut down. I look for guests who feel comfortable with themselves and many of the most popular guests have come through Imagine Publicity.
